Going for Gold!

Every four years for a short 2 week period the world is a better place. The distances between nations shrinks. We smile at people of different cultures, and are not surprised when they smile back. All of this and the pursuit of excellence (or “Citius, Altius, Fortius” as the motto goes).  Of course I am talking about that brief period that is the Olympic Games.
This is what we wish the world was like all the time.

Except that to those most closely involved, this is not a brief period.  Athletes train hard for long hours over a period of years. Hosts are working feverishly several years ahead to ensure venues are ready.  All this effort condenses into this great, but short, itinerant global pop up community which as spectators we enjoy, and then wish for more of that special feeling.
Maybe though, the special feeling can last longer if we really put our minds to it.

Tourism in Australia had a historic moment this past week with the release of the 2020 Tourism Industry Potential.  A ambitious goal for the whole of the tourism industry in Australia to go after.   goal like this will create brief moments that are special, such as launch events, announcements, and interesting conversations.  For the goal to come off, just like the Olympics, the work has to happen. This work will (must) involve doing the ‘hard yards’ just like an athlete preparing for Games.  Some of this work will be un-glamorous, difficult, and time-consuming work.
If we can all get it right, then the payoff will be that those special moments for our industry are more than just moments
